Project: Middle Ages Inquiry

"Middle Ages Inquiry" project will begin in January, 1999 and continue through January, 2000. The team of five teachers will teach a nine-week unit of instruction providing the opportunity for one hundred six-grade students to learn and apply an inquir
y-based research project. The instruction unit will integrate knowledge, skills, and processes in all subject areas, includes Math, Science, Music, Art and Social Studies. The thematic unit will focus on the following key concepts: change, power, conflict
, culture, patterns, and region.
The technologies include computer, Internet, video camera, digital camera, snappy video snapshot and Hyperstudio will be used for this project. Students will interview experts via email and chat rooms; access resources, particularly libraries via Inter
net; and connect with community partners. Students will communicate and present his/hers acquired knowledge as an exhibition, written document, video, multimedia project during the science and history fairs and develop their own web page to globally share
this project.
Goals for students will be achieved with this project:
- Cooperative learning groups will actively engage students mentally and physically.
- Problem solving increases achievement, stimulate cognitive development, increase self-esteem, and promote respect and tolerance of others.
- Students will use technology as a tool in locating, collecting, organizing and interpreting information.
- Students will develop an appropriate product via multimedia/hypermedia/desktop publishing with regard to the audience and the curriculum content.
