Kahler Middle School
Project Geneaology
The Genealogy Unit began at Kahler in 1995 in order to complete the
following curriculum requirements:
- Students complete a research paper using the format in the English
textbook.
- A Lake Central School Corporation goal is to build self-esteem at all
grade levels. At the elementary level, students focus on immediate
family. At the sixth grade level, family roots are documented through a
family roots are documented through a family tree. High school students
branch out with future plans and setting lifelong goals.
- Students study cultures of Europe, Central and South America in sixth
grade social studies.
- Students give a verbal presentation for the enhancement of
interpersonal relationships and diversity learning.
By enabling students with the use of computers, the Genealogy unit will
become a more effective teaching tool. Students will be able to trace
family members via the Internet. They will be able to contact areas of
the world where their ancestors have lived. School children in other
areas of the world would also benefit from the interaction.
Cross-Curricular
Science
Students will identify and report on a famous discovery or invention
created in their ancestral country. Information will include the
significance this has had on the world.
Mathematics
Students will develop various graphs, create a chronological timeline of
events in history.
Literature
Students will investigate myths, folklore, and various authors from
the student's selected country
Language Arts
Students will trace linguistic roots of their respective countries.
They will discover various alphanumeric symbols. Following the MLA
format, students will identify and accurately document all resources used.
Social Studies
Students will trace family roots and select one country from their
heritage. They will document demographic information, identify products,
discuss current government, and discover the culture of other countries.
